    Application of optimally-shaped phononic crystals to reduce anchor losses of MEMS resonators

    This work is focused on the application of Phononic Crystals to reduce anchor losses of MEMS contour mode resonators. Anchor losses dominates the losses in these type of released resonators at low frequency and at low temperature. The use of phononic crystals, intended as finite-periodic distribution of holes in the anchor, is fully compatible with fabrication processes and moreover it is easy to implement. The numerical results obtained in this work show how the use of these crystals can significantly reduce the anchor losses: without the use of the crystal the Q-factor related to only anchor losses is 344, with the use of the crystal it can reach up to 105900

    Isolation of intermediate valence hybrids between ferrous and methemoglobin at subzero temperatures.

    Quenching a hemoglobin solution partially saturated with carbon monoxide into a hydro-organic solvent containing ferricyanide will produce under suitable conditions a population of partially oxidized and CO-bound hemoglobin molecules. Since each Fe3+ heme carries one extra charge, it should be possible, in theory, to resolve the spectrum of intermediate compounds between hemoglobin and carbon monoxide, which was originally present in solution. In this study we report: 1) the development of a simple and rapid method to quench aqueous hemoglobin solutions into a hydro-organic solvent at subzero temperatures; 2) the determination of suitable experimental conditions to isolate valence hybrids between carbonmonoxy- and methemoglobin by isoelectric focusing at temperatures as low as -25 degrees C; and 3) the identification and isolation of all valence hybrids of different charge between carbonmonoxy- and methemoglobin

    Survey and modelling for the bim of Basilica of San Marco in Venice

    The Basilica of San Marco is a singular case in the field of Cultural heritage, as it constitutes a construction site always active for the maintenance and preservation of the basilica itself. The continuous intervention of conservation, due to the particular environmental conditions of Venice and the opening to the public, together with the complexity of the building itself, imposes the need to identify an optimized management system. For this reason, in 2013 the Procurator of St. Marco Basilica commissioned the construction of a 3D model of the Basilica to be used for the creation of a BIM. The model must meet the required precision of the scale of 1: 50, and should also include, in addition to the geometric description, a description of the mosaic and marble surfaces of the basilica through high resolution orthophoto which are essential for the restoration of the mosaics. The complexity of the church and the large and continuous flow of public led to work in non-optimal conditions especially for the acquisition stage. The basilica has certain peculiarities that led to some important choices, for example the use of photogrammetry instead of laser scanning technique. The same technique was preferred also by the need to realize, in addition to the geometric model, high-resolution orthophotos of marbles and mosaic surfaces. The modelling of the basilica has highlighted a number of problems related to the building features. The basilica, indeed, is the result of the juxtaposition of elements (capitals, columns) with different origin, which therefore cannot be standardized in special libraries. Moreover, especially in the extensive mosaic areas, there are not edges that characterize the architecture, but only beveled surfaces. This has resulted in a change also in the modeling paradigm with the need to identify alternative systems even for the construction of simple elements. Therefore, we decided to model using NURBS since it is the method that allows greater adherence to reality and, at the same time, a model with acceptable dimensions in terms of navigation and usability. Only the most sculptural pieces such as capitals and statues have been replaced by mesh models. As we were interested in different elaborations, the results of this work are a geometric NURBS model for the subsequent insertion into BIM environment, with the possibility of extracting two-dimensional drawings such as plans and sections, a mesh model with low resolution textures for online navigation and high resolution orthophotos. The survey work and modeling has been almost completed for the interior of the basilica whereas only the external remains to be acquired and modeled. For the management of the entire work it was decided to use the data organization system already used by the Politecnico di Milano for the Duomo di Milano. The BIM3DSURVEY system will be essential not only to manage the finished model, but it has been very useful also during the construction phase because it allows us to divide the entire work into more work units. However, this system required some changes to meet the peculiarity of this BIM, in particular the need to append and link the orthophotos to real surfaces, in order to use the model also as a spatial index for the images

    Isolation of intermediate compounds between hemoglobin and carbon monoxide.

    A human hemoglobin solution partially saturated with carbon monoxide was rapidly quenched at -25 degrees C into a hydro-organic buffer containing ferricyanide. Under the experimental conditions of pH, ionic strength, and buffer composition used in this work, it was found that the deoxy hemes were rapidly transformed into their met form, whereas practically no carbon monoxide-bound hemes were oxidized before the separation of the mixture from the oxidizing agent. As a preliminary step to the analysis of the resulting solution, carbonylhemoglobin solutions partially oxidized with ferricyanide were studied by isoelectric focusing at -25 degrees C under identical conditions. The relative position in the gel of all nine possible valence hybrids was established as follows (going from the anodic to the cathodic side of the gel) alpha CO2 beta CO2, (alpha CO beta +)(alpha CO beta CO) (alpha CO beta CO), (alpha CO2 beta +2), (alpha + beta CO), (alpha + beta +)-(alpha CO beta CO), (alpha + beta +)(alpha CO beta +), (alpha +2 beta CO2), (alpha + beta +)(alpha + beta CO), alpha +2 beta +2. When carbonylhemoglobin and methemoglobin were mixed in equal proportion at -25 degrees C and then analyzed by isoelectric focusing at the same temperature, it was found that the contribution of valence hybrids other than alpha CO2 beta CO2 and alpha +2 beta +2 to the total amount of hemoglobin in the gel was no more than 6%. When carbonylhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin were mixed in the same proportion and incubated at 20 degrees C so to allow the redistribution of the carbon monoxide molecules between all possible binding sites to occur, a substantially higher amount of valence hybrids, derived from the oxidation of intermediate compounds of hemoglobin with carbon monoxide, was found. The isoelectric focusing separation indicated the presence in the original solution of intermediate species other than carbonylhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin at a concentration of about 10% of the total

    The ghrelin paradox in the control of equine chondrocyte function: The good and the bad

    Increasing evidence suggests a role for ghrelin in the control of articular inflammatory diseases like osteoarthritis (OA). In the present study we examined the ability of ghrelin to counteract LPS-induced necrosis and apoptosis of chondrocytes and the involvement of GH secretagogue receptor (GHS-R)1a in the protective action of ghrelin. The effects of ghrelin (10-7-10-11\u202fmol/L) on equine primary cultured chondrocytes viability and necrosis in basal conditions and under LPS treatment (100\u202fng/ml) were detected by using both acridine orange/propidium iodide staining and annexin-5/propidium iodide staining. The presence of GHS-R1a on chondrocytes was detected by Western Blot. The involvement of the GHS-R1a in the ghrelin effect against LPS-induced cytotoxicity was examined by pretreating chondrocytes with D-Lys3-GHRP-6, a specific GHS-R1a antagonist, and by using des-acyl ghrelin (DAG, 10-7and 10-9\u202fmol/L) which did not recognize the GHS-R 1a. Low ghrelin concentrations reduced chondrocyte viability whereas 10-7\u202fmol/L ghrelin protects against LPS-induced cellular damage. The protective effect of ghrelin depends on the interaction with the GHS-R1a since it is significantly reduced by D-Lys3-GHRP-6. The negative action of ghrelin involves caspase activation and could be due to an interaction with a GHS-R type different from the GHS-R1a recognized by both low ghrelin concentrations and DAG. DAG, in fact, induces a dose-dependent decrease in chondrocyte viability and exacerbates LPS-induced damage. These data indicate that ghrelin protects chondrocytes against LPS-induced damage via interaction with GHS-R1a and suggest the potential utility of local GHS-R1a agonist administration to treat articular inflammatory diseases such as OA

    Wide band observations of the new X-ray burster SAX J1747.0-2853 during the March 1998 outburst

    We report on our discovery and follow-up observations of the X-ray source SAX J1747.0-2853 detected in outburst on 1998, March 10 with the BeppoSAX Wide Field Cameras in the energy range 2-28 keV. The source is located about half degree off the Galactic Nucleus. A total of 14 type-I X-ray bursts were detected in Spring 1998, thus identifying the object as a likely low-mass X-ray binary harboring a weakly magnetized neutron star. Evidence for photospheric radius expansion is present in at least one of the observed bursts, leading to an estimate of the source distance of about 9 kpc. We performed a follow-up target of opportunity observation with the BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments on March 23 for a total elapsed time of 72 ks. The source persistent luminosity was 2.6x10^36 erg/s in the 2-10 keV energy range. The wide band spectral data (1-200 keV) are consistent with a remarkable hard X-ray spectrum detected up to 150 keV, highly absorbed at low energies (Nh of the order of 10^23 cm^-2) and with clear evidence for an absorption edge near 7 keV. A soft thermal component is also observed, which can be described by single temperature blackbody emission at about 0.6 keV.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    A bolometric measurement of the antineutrino mass

    High statistics calorimetric measurements of the beta spectrum of 187Re are being performed with arrays of silver perrhenate crystals operated at low temperature. After a modification of the experimental set-up, which allowed to substantially reduce the background of spurious counts and therefore to increase the sensitivity on the electron antineutrino mass, a new measurement with 10 silver perrhenate microbolometers is running since July 2002. The crystals have masses between 250 and 350 micrograms and their average FWHM energy resolution, constantly monitored by means of fluorescence X-rays, is of 28.3 eV at the beta end-point. The Kurie plot collected during 4485 hours x mg effective running time has an end-point energy of 2466.1 +/- 0.8{stat} +/- 1.5 {syst} eV, while the half lifetime of the decay is found to be 43.2 +/- 0.2{stat} +/- 0.1{syst} Gy. These values are the most precise obtained so far for 187Re. From the fit of the Kurie plot we can deduce a value for the squared electron antineutrino mass m(nu)^2 of 147 +/- 237{stat} +/- 90{syst} eV^2. The corresponding 90% C.L. upper limit for m(nu) is 21.7 eV.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
